Sunday the 28th of May 2017 - Ride the Tide

Event Report

Sunday the 28th of May 2017 began early for the members of Annan Harbour Action Group. Our Harbour Development Officer, Alan Thomson, headed off by car to Silloth, Cumbria, to meet up with the sea kayakers who would be making the crossing from Silloth to Annan, riding the tide. After some scrutineering and assistance from the Mayor of Silloth, Mr. Tony Marklry and Silloth RNLI, 10 kayaks set off for the 10 mile crossing of the Solway Firth to Annan at around 10:45am. The tide pushes fast from Silloth into the Solway Firth and the kayakers made phenomenal time and reached the mouth of the River Annan at the front edge of the approaching tide. Our support boat, crewed by our RYA trained volunteers, had only just been able to float their boat at the Waterfoot as the intrepid kayakers arrived at around 12:15pm. A gentle paddle up river to Annan Harbour saw them arrive just as the public began taking part in the free kayak taster session. The paddlers from Cumbria were fed and watered, with all of them bulding up a fantastic appetite on the way over! The guys and girls who had completed the journey seemed to have really enjoyed this new route from England to Scotland and, as the tide turned again, 8 of the paddlers set off for the return leg at 3:00pm. Our support boat stood by as they paddled through some pretty rough water, at speeds of up to 6 mph, and after almost 5 miles the support boat left the group safely hugging the English coastline and returned to Annan Harbour. The paddlers arrived back at Silloth at 6:15pm, no doubt slightly tired and rather hungry.

It was a pleasure to see so many kayaks lined up on the harbour slipway and hopefully this event will be the first of many reciprocal events between Annan and Cumbria.

Above: Ready for the off! 10 intrepid sea kayakers, Silloth Mayer Mr. Tony Markley and far right, Annan Harbour Development Officer Alan Thomson.

This event is delivered as part of the "Developing Annan Harbour" project and is financially supported by LEADER, The Holywood Trust and Dumfries and Galloway Council.
